Edinburgh Visitor Levy
For stay dates from 24 July 2026, a Visitor Levy applies to all paid overnight stays in Edinburgh. Below is some simple guidance on this Levy and what it can mean for your stay.
THE LEVY AT A GLANCE:
How much is the levy?
This is a 5% charge on the accommodation cost for the first 5 consecutive nights of your stay and is in addition to your booking total.
Who does this apply to?
Applies to all stays in hotels, B&Bs, hostels, self-catering apartments, campsites, and more within the City of Edinburgh.
Are there any caps or restrictions?
There is a 5-night cap – the levy is only charged for the first 5 consecutive nights of your stay.
When does the levy come into effect?
Start date – applies to bookings made on/after 1 October 2025 and applied to stays on/after 24 July 2026.
Are there any exceptions?
Yes – certain guests may qualify for exemption but must pay upfront and reclaim from the Council via a rebate system.
Will I see a detailed breakdown of the Levy costs as part of my total bill?
Yes, rates displayed on our website will always be inclusive of all taxes including the levy for applicable dates and a breakdown of the Levy will be displayed also.
When will I pay for my levy?
- if you book a prepaid, non-refundable rate, the levy is taken at the time of booking
- if you choose a flexible rate which is paid closer to arrival or at arrival, you will pay the levy at the time of settling your stay cost
- if you book through a third party you will pay the levy at the time you pay the third party (however you would then miss out on our great book direct perks, so you will always get the best deal direct)
Will I receive a refund for the levy when I cancel my booking?
If your reservation has been prepaid and incurs a cancellation fee, the levy only will be refunded at the time of cancellation.
If your reservation is not prepaid and no payment has been taken, no refund will be required as the levy has not been paid yet.
